With an aim to acknowledge 1.4 million teachers as one of the key mobilisers to bring the power of literacy to children and citizens of Pakistan, a walk was held from China Chowk to D-Chowk to mark the World Teachers Day. The walk was organised by Ghazali Education Trust (GET) in collaboration with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in which students and teachers from different campuses of GET participated. Addressing on the occasion, Unesco Director Dr Kozue Nagata said that Unesco in Pakistan advocates; improving the status of teachers with government and the private sector, increasing the investment for initiatives aimed at teachers professional development, and holding concrete steps towards improving teachers working conditions. Unesco also urges the government to give representation to teachers in different legislative and statutory bodies to ensure their participation in the decision-making processes at various levels, she said. Member Board of Directors GET Mian Muhammad Ismail said that the government needs to formulate a comprehensive strategy for teachers and constitute an institute like Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) so that teachers could be trained to meet the educational demands of today and tomorrow. He said that government was paying no attention to train teachers. Our Human Development Index is on 136 number which is even lower than the countries like Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh , he said.
